But what makes a good friend? A "real friend"? What separates those that we just call "friends" from those that are "best friends"? Is it having someone that is just like you? Someone who has many of the same issues? Is it someone you see or talk to every week? Every day? Someone that you can laugh with? Someone that can make you laugh when all you can do is cry? Or is it someone that will cry with you?
Does calling someone your "best friend" really make it so? Or is it something that never has to be spoken?
In my opinion, a real friend, a true friend, a best friend... is everything that I said above and more. It is more than just a connection. It is more than commonality. It is more than a title. It's a place in your heart. A place in your mind. Something that no amount of time apart could ever affect. It's love. It's real love. It's loving what's right and what's wrong about someone. It's remaining true far beyond when your "true colors" show. It's trusting someone enough to let them into your life. And sometimes it's sharing with them something that you can't share with anyone else.
My best friend... is someone that I would do just about anything for. Someone that I have known for more than a long time. Someone who will forever have a place in my heart. Someone who is family. Someone that without them in my life... my life just wouldn't be the same.
That's what a real friend is to me. What about you?
